Montemor-o-Velho is a village located 24 miles (38.5 km) west of Coimbra along the Mondego River. The most important attraction of this town is that the 16th century castle, a Portuguese national monument along with also a significant fortress in Portugal’s early times. It was built to safeguard against attacks from the Moors. It is comprised of keep, citadel, a palace along with the Santa Maria da Alcáçova Church.
